TIt all began with an intuition in the early 2010s in the industrial wastelands of Berlin-Kreuzberg. At that time, Stéphane, the founder of Kanten, observed young people reinventing their relationship with urban space and physicality. There, clothing isn’t a flashy accessory or a status symbol: it’s a tool for empowerment, a flexible armor designed to withstand sleepless nights, freezing winters, and the constant transitions between artists’ studios and clubs with raw concrete walls.
But when looking at ready-to-wear offerings, a glaring gap is immediately apparent: on one hand, men’s fashion is often constrained by immutable bourgeois codes; on the other, women’s fashion is subject to the dictates of a frenzied cycle of disposable micro-trends. Between the two lies the vast void of a wardrobe truly designed for movement, gender-neutral, and crafted with the same exacting standards as the fine fabrics of haute couture.
The Meaning of Kanten: Changing Your Perspective
The word Kanten (観点) was not chosen at random. In Japanese, it refers to the point of view, the angle from which a phenomenon is perceived, the perspective that shapes our understanding of the world. Adopting the Kanten perspective means choosing to view the human body not as a surface to be molded according to arbitrary standards, but as a living architecture deserving of respect, comfort, and freedom of movement.
This change in focal length shaped every one of our technical decisions:
- The elimination of binary genders: Our cuts are neither «for men» nor «for women.» They are designed based on proportions of volume, armholes, and lengths that accentuate the vertical lines of every silhouette.
- The sculptural sketch: Eliminate the superfluous elements—such as fake buttons and unnecessary decorative stitching—to preserve only the purity of the line and the elegance of the fabric’s drape.
- Crop hybridization: Blending the monastic simplicity of Japan, the raw energy of Berlin, and the historic, tailored elegance of Paris.

Roots in Paris: The Alchemy of Le Sentier
After years of development in Berlin, the project took root in the beating heart of the French fashion industry: the Trail in Paris. It was here, amid this maze of cobblestone courtyards and historic workshops, that we found the skilled hands capable of transforming our geometric sketches into flawless mock-ups.
Every Kanten prototype goes through at least five rounds of adjustments. We test the garment in motion: while cycling in the drizzle, sitting for hours in front of a computer, and walking briskly in the wind. If a seam pulls or a clasp fails to fasten properly, we cut it out and start over. This commitment is the living legacy of local Parisian crafts, which we strive to preserve every day.
Our Economic and Philosophical Model
We operate according to a model that marks a complete break from the excesses of mass-market ready-to-wear fashion:
- Zero overproduction: We produce in limited, numbered runs or on a pre-order basis. We will never destroy a single meter of unsold fabric.
- Premium upcycled materials: More than 60% of our footage comes from the dormant archives of French haute couture houses (Discover our upcycling program).
- Fair and transparent prices: No fake discounts or misleading sales. Our pieces are priced fairly all year round, ensuring that every hour of craftsmanship is fairly compensated.
An Ecosystem Beyond Clothing: Sound, Materials, and Community
Kanten isn't just a clothing brand—it's a holistic sensory laboratory. In our vision, the way we dress is inextricably linked to what we listen to, the light around us, and the spaces we move through.
That's why we launched Kanten Radio, our independent station that continuously broadcasts podcasts, mixes by electronic artists, and ambient soundscapes that are perfect for concentration and mental escape. This is also the raison d'être of the Custom Lab, our interactive design tool that lets everyone put their own creative stamp on our organic cotton pieces.
